I had been on the look out for an interesting hard surface prop to improve both my hard surface modelling and texturing. Searching though my garage one day I found an old VHS player that I think dates to the mid or early 90's and still had a made in the UK stick on it. I would say I dusted it off to capture some reference images but the dust and dirt that had built up over the years was one of its most interesting features in my opinion.

My goal to was follow the reference images as closely as I could in the end I took over 50 photos as well as some additional research online. Although quite a basic over all shape the large number of vents and details likes folds in the metal provided an interesting challenge to model. Likewise with the materials getting the dust right across the difference surfaces was key.

It can't be over stated how important good reference and good feedback is and I want to give a massive thanks to Alex Beddows from the DiNusty Empire mentorship program who sent on on the right path with this one and followed up with me and to the community at 3DFT for the honest and detailed feedback.
